This is interesting. Searching for a device to reset the BMS and came across this on the autotrader site which says it will reset itself. How to replace the car battery on a Land Rover Range Rover Evoque - Car Ownership
Which kind of validates my comments post #23 in the other thread you've been posting in where I've seen variations that could be put down to the system going through a learning cycle.
When you have access to 24/7 monitoring it's all too easy to over react and whack on the charger when you see a slight drop, but leave it alone for the car to do it's own thing and it sorts itself out and comes back up to full charge.

The author of the Auto Trader link which was very informative also stated “it is highly advised to make use of a charge saver to ensure that no in-vehicle settings are lost ie; windows seats, infotainment and computer data settings” - So far have not found anyone that has used one of these devices on an Evoque, I have a OBD2 memory saver which has worked OK for me some years ago on a couple of previous vehicles when changing the main battery, I was considering using this on my 2012 Si which is due for a battery change but looking at most posts it appears unnecessary maybe due to the use of less volatile memory installed within later vehicles over the past 10 years or so, unless advised otherwise.

Hi all, has anyone used an independent i.e. Halfords.National.AA etc to replace the battery or is it necessary to go back to jag, land rover or various outlets that offer the battery type? I'm just concerned about the computer settings being affected. Any replies welcome.
Hi Rangers
I used Halfords to fit a new stereo in my Audi TT a number of years ago but when I got the car back the heated rear window wasn't working
As I am a fully-qualified time-served Sparky with over 40 years experience I decided to take a look myself
It turns out the so-called expert installer they told me they were using had taken out the fuse supplying the rear heater and used it for the new radio and not bothered to replace it
At best this is corner cutting at worst this is shitty workmanship
Needless to say when I went in to complain about this event I was met with total apathy and after a few minutes of me loudly complaining about shitty service i left
AND I WILL NEVER RETURN
My advice is never used this company as they really don't give a **** about customer service or satisfaction
By the way the store I am referring to is in Huddersfield and the so-called expert installer was called SEB

This thread is Over 2 years ago, and Ranger has not been on since 2023, so unlikely you'll get a response.

Appreciate you had a bad experience and crazy not to put in a new fuse given its a penny part, Halfords arent known for their best service, but it's a little unfair to berate a whole company based on 1 experience, it all comes down to the management and staff in the store, so good you name and shame the actual store.

just my 2 cents. I have just replaced the main Evoque battery with the 820ah Exide version suited for start stop systems. Purposefully didn't keep the system live because I thought it needed a clean restart on the ECU and other systems. Couldn't be happier with the result. After resetting the BMS all systems booted up just fine and I have now a fault free Evoque (for the time being) the start stop system started working again, climate control is more responsive on cold start, and the transmission shifts quicker than ever. My advice, change the battery and reset the BMS through the recomended process.

Thought I'd add to this with my own recent experience.
Just had my battery replaced by a RAC mobile mechanic. Which is odd, since on their own website if you put in your reg and look up the available batteries for your vehicle in the RAC shop, it brings up a giant exclamation mark stating "this battery can only be replaced by a main dealer".
However, booking a mobile RAC mechanic on the exact same website seems perfectly fine. Replaced in 20-something mins.
All seems well. Would recommend. Great quick-fix. Convenient and at reasonable cost.

I wonder if the RAC website is defaulting to the MHEV which has a much more complicated dual battery set up?

You'd think so. But I think not.
After putting in my reg, a list of 11 different batteries came up. Priced low to high.
Oddly/sadly there was no choice in the battey I had replaced by their mobile mechanic. But contradictory to their own site, their mechanic replaced it with ease and without hesitation.
I did mention to him about their own online shop telling me otherwise. But he looked at me as if I was NUTS!🤷‍♂️

Tried the RAC website, 7 batteries but no fitting. Odd, I may have taken a morning, and took my time and pictures, but swapped the battery in mine myself. It’s worked for the last year so I must have done something right!

Probably just covering their own legal backsides, JLR say the BMS should be reset when replacing a battery (not essential IMHO).

I also thought BMS reset is not essential. After replacing my original battery, driven about 600 miles and BMS did not catch up. So I had to get it done and only then did the stop/start work again for the first time in years.

Perhaps it depends how bad the original battery was before the change, or just didn't give it enough time to recalibrate, no doubt there are variations in BMS version depending on model year also? (my start/stop worked ok)
I've had a BM2 battery monitor fitted for a few years now and I've noticed that every so often the alternator allows the battery voltage to drop lower than usual before recharging. It's my opinion (which could be entirely wrong :) ) that this is the BMS checking/calibrating for the battery condition, which is obviously going to slowly deteriorate with time.

I also didn’t reset the BMS after changing the battery but I had the old battery in the car fully charged using a CTEK connected as instructed by JLR before swapping. Stop/Start was active straight away and I’ve not (touching wood) had any problems with the car since.

In my younger years (I now sound like an old fart) I'd have never have thought twice about taking a battery out and fitting a new one.
But even taking the plastic cover off to get to the battery, I almost lost one of those pesky plastic "screws" down the back of beyond. Way down deep in the engine somewhere. Took me longer to retrieve it than it took the RAC guy to fit my battery.
It was at that point I figured I better seek a "professional battery fitter" 🤪
What makes this even funnier (in hindsight. though not at the time). I pre-warned the RAC guy of my mishap and to be extra careful. Only for to watch him remove the first plastic "screw" but lose the washer deep DEEP down into the abyss. 😆
Thankfully he did find it.

I think it was mentioned somewhere that the old battery was dated March 2020. So it was kinda old anyway.
RAC guy to his credit did a few checks and ensured me the alternator was absolutely fine. But I knew instantly with those errors gone from the dash and that my tailgate worked for the first time. Also, not having start/stop working. The original battery must have been on its way out.
Shame this new one only has a 3yr guarantee though. I'd have expected a bit longer. Oh well.
