Mine has had the gearbox software reset to factory setting & it seems to be better for a while. The problem seems to stem from the self learning program for the gearbox & after a short while it seems to revert to the same behaviour as before, I.E clunks & jerks. Well done JLR. The Evoque with it's myriad of completely useless & unneeded electronics is too clever for it's own good.

I guess there is more to it than JLR electronics.

I had a beamer with similar symptoms and after resetting gearbox adaptation, it used to get better for a few days. However, symptoms used to return after a few days.

Gearbox oil flush and adaptation reset resolved that.

I remember you saying that your car has been to the dealer multiple times. Have you asked them to change the gearbox oil +/- Haldex oil?

SSD (dealer level diagnostic software) suggests changing the gearbox oil if it cannot find a hardware error. The issue I see is that (presumably) most dealers are not bothered to do it and this information is not cascaded to us (unless your dealer is exceptionally good and honest).

Just for info I asked Bell Engineering if they would change my auto transmission oil. They won’t touch auto gearboxes.
For an independent view I can see no harm in ringing an independent auto specialist and asked their advice. VMTP Midlands Ltd know what they are talking about. They only deal with auto gearboxes.
I have no connection to them whatsoever (before you ask). But having rang several main dealers who hadn’t got a clue and several independent supposed Land Rover garages VMTP were the only ones who appeared to know what they were talking about. Very friendly and happy to give advice wether you use them or not.

Hi makkan, one of the first things renewed was the Haldex pump with new filter & presumably oil when the rear diff was also renewed, but I don't think the gearbox oil has been changed.

With those symptoms, gearbox oil change + sump gasket (if needed) is the first line of protocol and if that does not help then Haldex.

Worth of having a polite conversation with your dealer.

Just to correct:

Here is the response which I got from ZF UK (manufacturer of nine-speed gearbox)/

So, they do no suggest to change/ service the gearbox.

Unless there are issues and in that case, this is what JLR suggests:

When we go through SDD (JLR diagnostic portal), it suggests (selecting harsh gear change on troubleshooting):
1- Reset gearbox adaptation settings
2- If the problem persists, update the firmware of gearbox only.
3- Change the transmission oil if above fails.

Hi makkan, many thanks (y) for the info I will ask the question when I take it in next time (which should be quite soon).
Found this:

Not sure if this is applicable to your car, however, our American friends have this tranny (as they call) recall Q500.

Further details here:

Turn on ignition but don't start engine.

Press throttle pedal to the floor and hold there for 15 seconds.

Release the pedal and turn off the ignition.

Wait for 2 Minutes then start car and drive.
this worked first try me! Thank you.
However I think i had put it in maintenance mode trying to get the “park brake fault” message to go away (which worked) but i did not ever go through the process of taking it out of maintenance mode because it never said it went into maintenance mode.

Hi all,

I have the same problem with gear. I went to a service point and they told me I should change the valve body.
I change the valve body and nothing change, it looks the same (junk when go from P to R or D.

Have you got a solution?

Hi,

did you find a solution to this?
Hi PhilB,

Mine has the same problem, at it's worst it is a 3 smallish clunk/jerk & 1 VERY SEVERE CLUNK/JERK at the end of sequence as it goes from either R to D or visa-versa, sometimes is fades away for a short time but still returns. it is going into dealers on 13th Sept they think it could be Haldex pump unit related as this was not changed when the new diff was fitted early July.

I did a gearbox reset (for a different reason before this happened for the first time) & lost approx. 5 MPG immediately.

Hi,

I have a 2012 Automatic Prestige model which I've has since January with no major problems. Although I have this intermittent problem I'm hoping someone can shed some light on.

Have searched the internet for a solution but I can't find anyone who has had exactly the same problem as me!

The issue is when I go from either Park, Reverse or Neutral to Drive sometimes there is quite a big jerk or clunk when Drive is selected. Once the car is moving I don't have any problems with the gearbox moving up or down through the gears. It's just the initial selection of drive that makes the car jolt.

It also doesn't always do it but seems to be happening more and more often.

Anyone have any idea?

Thanks
Hi, I have exactly the same model & year and mine does the same thing, it’ll do it for a while then stop for long time before it reoccurs!! Never quite got to the bottom of it I’m afraid. Adele

I’m the original poster for this thread. My evoque still has this problem! I had a gearbox oil change and it made no difference and this may be a coincidence or maybe it’s linked but after the oil change I now have a juddering gearbox when going up inclines and I either have to come off acceleration or increase speed to make the gearbox change gear to stop it juddering.
