The Evoque's Second Battery?

While having a nose around under the battery cover I discovered what looks like a smaller secondary battery siting next to the standard 80Ah Battery. Any idea what this powers up? I'd take a wild guess at something to do with the alarm system?

Afraid I couldn't make out any markings on it.

"Transmission fault select park before stop."
This is due to auxiliary battery is going flat. Auxiliary battery is located underneath passenger side glovebox where foot rest is located, need to remove plastic cover.
Dont need to remove battery housing to remove battery. Just need to use a small flat screw driver insert in the clip and press down to pop it out.
Found similar land rover auxiliary on ebay for $100 plus or so, but went to local battery store and got one for $20 instead.
Replaced battery and message when away.
Hope this help someone with similar problems.

Cheers!

Speaking of batteries. I recently had to have a new battery installed by the agents as ,apparently, my battery was not up to scratch and was contributing to various problems with the car. Now when I open the bonnet and listen carefully, particularly on the left side of the engine bay, I can hear a constant, fairly high pitched hummm. Surely that must contribute to the battery depleting slowly?
Does anyone know what it is and/or why it runs constantly?

Never had a definitive answer on the noise, many cars do it, purge valve has been most likely candidate. But it is normal. When I was trying to investigate my failed parking sensor last weekend, I couldn't try to listen to them because this darn noise was going on!

Hi @Rangelambo - this thread is a bit confusing as it mentions the second stop/start battery which is different from the early gearbox one.

FWIW This is just an owners forum, so it's always good to start with a "Hi, Hello, please, thanks" when asking for help...

This is a very interesting thread and confusing at the same time.

Do we know which cars/models have 3 batteries and which have two batteries?

Also, after reading all this, this is what I understood so far:

1- Main battery (12-14V 80Ah) powering all the electronics.
2- Secondary small battery (12V, 14-15Ah) helps with the start/stop function.
3- Small battery (12V, 1.42Amp) under the glove has something to do with gearbox fault?

EDIT: After researching found that 3rd small battery is backup batter and used to retain the memory settings while the other two batteries are being replaced. Not sure how that has a link to gearbox fault.

Anyone with confirmed information?

Hi,
I realise I'm resurrecting an ancient thread but hoping you can help? My recently bought 2014 9 speed auto has stop/start but the second battery is missing. But also the + lead which should connect to it. I guess it was removed to eliminate any risk of a short. I was hoping you may be able to tell me where this + lead from the 2nd battery runs to? -I need to reinstate the system as I have various other eletrical issues and by having the S/S connected properly, I'm hoping to eliminate it from my enquiries...

Hi Danny,
Do you have a 6 or 9 speed gearbox? -I think the consensus is that if you have a 9 speed, there is no auxillary battery under the glovebox -just the 2 under the bonnet (main and start/stop). If you have a 6 speed you should have 1 main battery under the bonnet and the auxillary under the glove box. I hope that helps.

Yep- my 2014 car has it, but I do suspect they converted to a single (AGM type) battery in later years. I don't know enough about later models I'm afraid. Someone will probably come along and say they have a 9 speed with a main under the bonnet and an auxillary under the glovebox now!

Funny you should say that.......

actually, I dont even know where the main battery is, let alone if there is another one anywhere 😁

...As i've the message" Low Battery " the only one to change is the big main.
Whoa! - Don't be so hasty with that warning message, as almost everyone seems to get it for no apparent real reason.
It started on mine when it was just 2 years old - its now 6.5 years old & I've still got the original battery ( and the same needless warning flashing up at least once a week)
With mine, the local dealer first suggested I take it there for a charge every few months or so, but when it was out of warranty I went & bought my own charger for the car that simply connects via a connector on the grill. Max 7 hours later = fully charged battery again (y)

Ok understand
Some can ask Range Rover to change the limit in the ECU from 13 Volt to 12.5 V ? 😁😁😁

I've already abattery charger indicated "Battery AGM 100% charged" and i still get the same message :(:(:(

My old Audi Q3 doe'nt have this kind of problem...

Hi, and thanks for that. It does make sense and the 'aux' looks original. Its service is due later this month (I use an independent JLR garage) so I will ask them to test/check & replace as necessary. I will have done more miles before the end of April which means the main battery should be charged by then.
Thanks again.

Hello,
I feel the same, in that it is not something I would want to pay a small fortune for to resolve. If the aged battery requires replacement and it solves the autolift issue that's great but the main battery is relatively new so there may be another issue. Presently it only decides not to lift 'occationally' I do use the stop/start & am keen to see that resolved too.

I'm of the opinion that the main battery is not at fault, as it still plays up straight after I've fully charged it.
However, replacement of the 2nd smaller battery WILL probably fix your Stop/Start

Hi again,
Having now charged my main battery (I assume the aux also charges from the main battery) the stop/start appears to be resolved and is now working again, as has the auto lift tailgate. I do think it is likely that the aux is due for replacement and may no longer be holding its charge for long periods.
As yet I have not identified an OEM replacement that appears the same anywhere. Any suggestions?

My 2016 model didn't have the second battery under the bonnet next to the main battery. No idea if it had the one behind the glovebox either as I never looked.
