So I thought I'd post a thread describing the problem I had with the gearbox on my car and also the solution that has fixed the fault without having to take the gearbox apart.
Once the car had been driven for a while and the gearbox was up to operating temp, the car had a very noticeable judder or lurch when moving away from standstill, typically when taking your foot off the brake to move forward when stuck in a traffic jam or at a junction. The only way to avoid it was to select N and then D before moving away. It wouldn't happen immediately or on every journey but if you got stuck in traffic after about 30 min it would.
I spoke to many gearbox specialists and they all suggested booking the car in for diagnosis and most likely at best a valve body replacement (circa ÂŁ1k) or at worst a full rebuild (circa ÂŁ3-4k). The car had only 65k miles and had already had a gearbox fluid change in the past 10k miles so I kind of ruled out a further gearbox oil flush as being of any real use.
I was given very generic advice that if the transmission is problematic when cold (judder/mechanical noise/unable to select gear/falls out of gear etc.) then it will most likely need a rebuild of sorts. But if the gearbox behaves when cold and the problem arises once up to temp then it's likely it could be fixed with a valve body replacement. Of course, you should always check for fault codes first and in my case I was getting some gearbox related codes and the problem persisted only when the car was up to temp, or more specifically, the gearbox oil was up to temp, which is impossible to determine without diagnostic equipment.
I was literally about to book in for a suspected valve body replacement when I found this document on a different Evoque thread............
Admittedly, this was for the North American market but the Condition Summary described my exact problem:
Clearly, it made sense to try a software update before ripping the gearbox apart so I booked it in at my local main dealer (Harwoods Land Rover) and requested this update be applied to my car. They found a corresponding Technical Bulletin for the UK market on the system that had been issued around the same time and attempted to install it.
Unfortunately, the car wouldn't take the update but the technician was confident he could make some changes to the Power module and some adaption changes that would have the same effect.
Well, almost 2 months later and the car has been perfect ever since. I have driven well over 2k miles in that time including many long journeys over 1 1/2 hrs when the car would normally play up so I can safely say the problem has been fixed. And I was charged only 1 hour's labour by the main dealer.
A big thanks to Harwoods garage in Pulborough for their expertise and for saving me at least ÂŁ1k in repair costs that would most likely have not solved the problem. For anyone else with this issue or similar, try a visit to the dealer before going down the gearbox rebuild route.
For the record my Evoque is a 2013 2.2 SD4 with the Asin 6 speed automatic and 65k miles.

- A rough gear change or 'jerk' when releasing the foot brake from a stationary position while the vehicle is in DRIVE(D) (handbrake not applied). For example, in a traffic jam or pulling away from traffic lights.
