OOONO speed camera detector - anybody got one?

I picked up a Saphe Drive Pro from Halfords. It’s tiny, needs no power cable (rechargeable and turns itself on when it detects your phone nearby). Charge lasts a month or so.

Works off GPS and a database (doesn’t detect anything) and seems pretty accurate.

It shows your current speed and the actual limit on screen at all times which I really like and warns you if you go above it. If the speed limit is about to change it will show the upcoming one too (in the photo I’m in a 20 zone about to enter a 30).

I know you can get apps for your phone but I wanted something that would just work, even if I forgot to start it up, and this does that. I also didn’t want a phone mounted anywhere on my dash….

It’s the screen that was the decider for me. Besides the beep there’s nothing to let you know about what the upcoming cameras are (traffic light, regular gatso, average speed etc) with the oono. With the Saphe you get a different icon for each and it also tells you how far away they are… plus I like that it always lets me know the current limit as there are times when I’m unsure.

If you are worried about it being conspicuous when you are parked - it pops off its mount in seconds but I just leave mine attached. It’s not like a £500 TomTom thief magnet from back in the day…

Guess I must have just missed out on the tech that shows the current speed on the dash with mine being a 2015 model. That would have been nice to have fully integrated!

Another option (more expensive) would be to get an Apple CarPlay upgrade installed and then you could have pretty much any app (Waze, TomTom, Google Maps etc) displayed on the dashboard screen together with their speed camera warnings...

The current speed thing is nice to have it's only a small thing, about the size of a 1p coin and as I say, unless you're looking at the speedo at the time you don't really notice it. It shows the speed limit in the same way as a road sign, a white circle with a red border and the border flashes if you go over the limit - you can set it at the limit, 5mph over or 10mph over. But you don't really notice it even when it's flashing. Would probably be better if the whole icon flashed rather than just the red border. and as I say, there's no accompanying sound; I believe there is sound now on the newer versions, it really needs it.

The other thing is I assume it's tied to the sat nav version, I assume mine's the InControl version but I don't know how to update it. Some say there's a sim card slot for the sat nav but if there is, I can't find it.
Updating my satnav is on my to-do list too... pretty sure mine is upgraded using the USB socket in the little armrest cubby. There's a 2020 update you can buy on a flash drive to do the job (latest and final version they do for my model). Not sure if yours would also be the same?

This is the one I was looking at. It's the 2020 version and it does say it's for Evoque's from 2012-2016 under 'compatibility'...

Actually this looks like the one you found on eBay for ÂŁ79 which is a more palatable price! I'd rather buy it this way than download it to a USB drive as you sometimes get compatibility issues with the size/format of such devices etc and I wouldn't want to brick my infotainment system...

On the official Here website it does say 12-16 but then it says 12-15 in the listing. Might be a typo but not worth the risk so definitely get him to check before putting in an offer. .

The only thing stopping me from ordering is that I just haven't been able to figure out what version my maps currently are. Having not owned the car from new I don't know if the previous owner might have already updated it. Don't want to waste ÂŁ70-ÂŁ80 on something I don't need but the version info seems to be impossible to locate...

Youtube video here that may be useful. It's US, but same procedure.

Land Rover LR4 2015 GPS Map Update Tutorial
That's a really helpful video actually, thanks. At least I can confirm that it's the correct option for my satnav unit, Only difference is I have dedicated buttons around the sides of the screen but everything else looks identical. Two and a half hours is a long time to leave the engine running though!
