Oil Service Reqiured

Hi,

I was hoping for some guidance, I've been an Evoque owner for the last 5 years and got my latest Evoque in September last year (71 plate)

I've done 7,300 miles in it and it has started to show the message "oil service required" on the driver dashboard. I've checked the oil levels and they are fine, also checked the information on the touchscreen which shows next oil change in 582 days or 0 miles...hmmm...I wouldn't generally expect it to require an oil change so soon? Especially given the low mileage too. I've checked DPF and that's showing clean and efficient on the app.

LR are saying they need it in for diagnostics but the earliest with a courtesy car is mid December..

⬆ What he says... As it's a diesel, it has a sensor that detects fuel in the sump and once it goes over a critical level will require a service. It's only a maximum of 21,000 miles/2 years but in reality it'll never get there. A lot depends on how it is driven and if the regen cycles can get the DPF hot enough so it runs less often. Every time a Euro6 diesel runs a regen, it richens up the mixture too much so the engine gets hotter but this also means there is more unburnt fuel to get past the rings and into the oil.

You will probably find it needs annual oil services which are just the oil and filter with a service reset. Once out of warranty you can do them yourself if you are relatively handy. (y)

Thanks all, I'm hoping it's relatively low risk to wait until early December for them to look at it.

My old Evoque was an annual service and although a 17 plate, I never had any oil service messages but it could be the annual service caught it before it triggered.
Please see newbie tips in the link in my signature.
Adding you spec to your profile means we can see what vehicle we are discussing.

FWIW I believe a LR warranty only gives 1 month grace on services if they want to get stinky?!

Personally, for the cost of a tank of fuel I’d buy the oil and do it myself and I aim to do oil changes annually anyway. I’d rather do preventative maintenance than have costly repairs!

But JLR don't want you to do that! I asked if I could have access to update my own service record and they do not allow it. They don't want you to service your own car better/more often as they think any old VAT registered garage will do a better job!

See N025 software update

Drain the oil using a suction system, while that is happening change the filter, go drink coffee or tea while the oil finishes draining, add new oil, set a flag in some software. We really let them rip us off, you don’t even need a spanner.

They don’t even use a lift. The official method is to suck the oil out through the dipstick tube and the oil filter is relatively easily accessible.

Not certain why jlr would fit a sensor to an engine that they wouldn't have known suffered from oil dilution until it was fitted to evoques and DS's and ran by owners for a year, the same engine fitted longitudinally in other models doesn't suffer. I also asked if I could be shown a schematic of where the sensor was after a service advisor told me there was one, apparently too busy, I asked for the service manager to show me, apparently on his lunch, strangely no one was available probably because there is no sensor, I believe it was the algorithm within software update N025 that separated the the oil service counter from the maim service counter

Valid point! Also @HmmmUK I had originally thought it was calculated (read, guessed!) but with the reset it just acted in a way I thought seemed like a sensor reading. But I've not seen reference to the sensor in the Workshop Manual and they only refer to an "oil dilution counter" in the resets.

Aha... found it:

So, yup, an algorithm. (y)

Possibly because they're sending a sample off to be tested for oil dilution, they won't do in house testing as equipment is expensive

Thats the reason they have those big plate glass windows so they can see you coming!

Nope, it’s in the JLR workshop manual for my MY2020. The reference is given in Captain Nick’s post #26 above. The reference number in blue takes you to the correct page of the pdf. It only resets the oil counter but I’m not doing a service and for little more than the cost of a full tank of fuel I can source oil and filter and change oil in about an hour at my convenience (and make and drink coffee). Using an oil suction system and I hardly get my hands dirty and much less danger of spilling hot oil on the floor.

It might have nothing to do with it being a diesel.
I took delivery of my P300e at the end of December 21. Current mileage is 5500
For the last 2 weeks the app has been telling me the car will need a service soon and in the last couple of days the dash tells me I need a service in 1500 miles…..so around 7000 miles in total. I’m aiming to get it done in December. Given I took out a 3 year service plan with LR for circa £750 it will be off to the main dealer for the service.

There's some differing posts so it's not easy to say for sure. But some people have said their P300e requires a yearly service - so that warning might be right if you have a 'December' vehicle?

All seems a bit of a joke really. I had been watching the "miles to service indicator" carefully and the oil service was a few thousand lower than the main service. So a fortnight ago on the Autobahn I suddenly got "oil service required" flash up on the dash. Checked and it said 0 miles to oil service. A few hours later I checked again and it said 300 miles. Checked again the next morning and it said 3500 - same as main service. It had reset itself.
When I got back to UK talked to local dealer who told me there's a sensor in the sump that checks the oil. After all I've read on here do I believe him? (Cue sigh of despair). It was close to main service so I had it done. They also told me the balance shafts are whining but don't worry, we'll look at it at next service - in 2 years' time!
Well I tried to buy a new one but LR aren't even accepting orders for the model I want. So I'll just keep paying for the extended warranty for when the engine falls apart. The really annoying thing is that I've looked at alternatives, and other than the Disco Sport, which is what I've been trying to order, I can't anything that I'd like to buy instead!

Update on my issue - took it in, it had the oil service, oil replaced, topped up the adblue, fixed the ad blue cap that came off all while I waited in the dealership. No cost as within warranty so happy days. Quite surprised that you don't have to pay for the fluids regardless of warranty. Got to see the new RR Sport in Grey looks stunning
