My wife has just bought a new evoque, the 2Ltr diesel SE Tec and can't get anywhere near the estimated mileage. She mostly uses it for town journeys, any ideas on what mpg she should be averaging, currently she gets about 26

Diesels take a while to bed in, does sound low but depends on driving conditions, should get 40.

I would echo Philskill's comments I'm not too surprised if it's an automatic and it's used mainly for town driving. I've just clocked up 5k miles and the fuel consumption has improved by 7+ mpg since we first got it. Be patient it will im prove

Its a looker but not really a town car. If you do 12,000 miles a year mixed driving you get about 44 to 48 mpg.

That does sound low but will depend on the traffic.

Going by my cars computer I get about 32/34 in town but over 40 on a run. Working it out properly these figures are optimistic by a few MPG. Mine's a 9 Speed Auto.

Town driving is not good - yes even after 16,500 miles - between 28mpg (on really congested days) and 35mpg. But consistently get 40 to 45 on open roads - sometimes over 50!

Luckily very little town driving and more mid to long journeys - so not too worried.

As above - not sure it is really a town car!!

That's the benefit of your manual Ms Beast, better fuel consumption.

I thought it was meant to be the opposite?  Well at least the way I drive

I think you'll find that the manual box will give you better fuel consumption and a slightly higher top speed. The auto box gives you better 0-60 time and more relaxing drive when in traffic which suits me fine these days

When I will get 23 mpg in town I will be quite happy. Currently I'm getting around 18. This figure is affected by the low temps (around -5 grd Celsius)

Wow!!! that is low. what do other equivalent cars get where you are??

Over the last 2,000 miles I have averaged 41mpg (onthe cars computer). (Car has now done 6,000miles).

It goes up on long journeys and down with town trips.

If you are routinely only doing short journeys, then a diesel is not for you! Petrol is much better.
A diesel engine takes a lot longer to heat up cf a petrol engine in order to reach its optimum working conditions.
