My wife has a 2017 diesel.
The DEF warning is now showing at start up.
When I check the Vehicle Info setting, all it says is there is 1056 miles left of Adblue.
It doesn't tell me how many litres are left.

question....if its a 14 litre capacity (according to the handbook) how many litres can I add?
How much can I put in without overfilling?

thanks

My wife recently bought (from a non LR dealership) a 2017 2.0 TD4 SE Tech 5dr Auto. It has 31K miles on the clock.
Tried to search on the forum but nothing has come up, hence my initial questions above.

....if its a 14 litre capacity (according to the handbook) how many litres can I add?
The Vehicle Info system is saying its got 1056 miles of fluid left.
How much can I put in without overfilling?

Never had a diesel that required Adblue before, so neither of us have any knowledge.
Just keep hearing people saying "fill it up yourself".

I've been led to believe that after filling it up, the warning should just vanish? Nothing else needs reset?

thanks for any help.

on a quick search this looks like a useful for you to look at ... when I had mine I had the service plan so it was done free at a LR dealers..

Thanks. I'm based in Northern Ireland and we don't have any Toolstation over here. I pick up some at my local Halfords.

Is it documented anywhere what actually happens if you overfill?

I received a warning today. Mine is a MY20 so it shows the amount required, but I assume it would be the same for yours…

It actually says 9 Ltrs on the dash warning. The above is from the app.

Not good advice at all, a dealer apprentice once overfilled our older MY16 because he didn't know how much to put in, that vintage of evoque doesn't tell you how many litres are left or how many to put in only miles left and as the OP says how do you work it out, I guess its just experience but we always entrusted the dealer so any 'incorrect quality diesel exhaust fluid' warnings were their problem not mine. The latest evoque as can be seen from DKZs screenshot actually tells you what you need to know

What we do know is is its a 14L tank, you can buy 10L reletively cheaply from a petrol station forecourt, the top up warning on the dash gives you roughly 1400 miles notice before it runs out, what we don't know is in the older model evoque is how many litres left for those 1400 miles but using DKZs screenshot it suggests at 1500 miles to empty he still has 5L and its asking to top up with 2gallons which is by my simple maths about 9L so it wouldn't be a good idea to put in 10L the moment the warning appeared, perhaps leave it till 1000 or 800 miles and put in 10L

Hi Chanion1 and welcome to the Forum,
The LR Assist chap advised me to never put more than 5 litres in to avoid overfilling, but there are threads on here that show you could add around 9 litres when the warning comes up. But why risk overfilling when 5 litres will last for ages?
It's guesswork with the earlier models but I think the later ones (presumably the ones with the AdBlue filler next to the fuel filler cap) tell you how much to add.

But why risk overfilling when 5 litres will last for ages?
Don’t LR say that one litre should last about 500 miles. So 5 litres would be 2500 miles. That is possibly only a couple of months before needing refilled again?

I maybe just need to do some trial and error. Hopefully less error.
And fill up just a little and see how it lasts etc.

My tank implies it’s got 1056 miles left. Technically that should be about 2 litres.
If it’s a 14 litre tank, then I should easily be able to get 10 litres in.

Some testing needed me thinks.

As its so important not to overfill its piss poor that there is no gauge to inform of quantities remaining/required.

How do the dealerships know how much to add without over filling?

When ours throws the 1500 mile warning I buy a 10lt can and put half in and the other half in my van!

What's the definition of "overfilling" though?
Is it when physically no more can go in, and it actually flows out the end of the pipe, or can you overfill without even seeing the liquid near the top?

#27 ·
Overfilling is when you submerge to ultrasonic sensor, well before any comes out the filler neck. The dealer in question in our experience got the apprentice to fill it, as a rule if we're paying 29.99 to top it up then we ran it down to 100 miles so as to get our monies worth, this time the lad checked how many miles we had and then asked my Mrs how much 'SHE' wanted in, she said you tell me your the mechanics, well he proceeded to overfill it and cause no end of problems

From memory we always used to get it and it read 4800 miles to empty but how much they put in I don't know, perhaps they didn't want by risk overfilling it, shame on this occasion the apprentice wasn't thinking, my advice is unless you can reel off a 1000 miles in 2 days like Maffy then leave it till 500 miles and put 10L in, no worries of overfilling then

There is a sensor in there that knows when it gets low. How else would the warning message get triggered?
And the tech people will get the same reading from the sensor saying what % the tank is at. As mentioned before, I can monitor mine with a custom app I use and that dial is moving as I go around corners or up & down inclines.
Any tech with a doctorate behind his name would be able to tell you that 15% left in a 14 litre tank will require no more than 11.9 litres to fill. Give or take a margin not to overfill. The doctorate part is where you convert the litres to gallons for the sake of the invoice to the customer. 😜
Was it clever from JLR not to avail this to their customers and rather have a warning comes up so you can panic and go to your friendly JLR to fill up for you (at a price no less), I must say yes to that.

What is the app and OBD reader you are using to get this information?

#32 ·
I use my OBD2 from my motorbike - it is called UniCarScan. The app I use is called Car Scanner.
Most reputable OBD2 scanners should work, I am not talking about knock-off Chinese ones from Fleabay.
I got a decent reader off Amazon which reads a lot of data via the Car Scanner app, however the Reagent graph is always at zero. Not sure if I need pony up and pay for the full version in order to get the data?

The standard advice for pre-MY20 cars (with filler under bonnet) is wait until you get the warning then put 10 litres in. That way you won't overfill it and bu**er the sensor. MY20 and later, with the filler by the fuel cap, the car tells you how much to put in, although it's best to wait until nearly empty and then put in 10l.

#39 ·
I get that but ive already given a detailed response, for the avoidance of doubt I'll say it again, it's a 14L tank, at the 1500mile warning you roughly have 5L left so putting in 10L at the first sight if the warning risks overfilling it so wait till 1000miles or 800miles and then put 10L in, or do what we do and run it down to 100miles only we then go to the dealer, you on the other hand can safely put in 10L, yes it won't be brimmed but it'll give you a few thousand miles

For completeness of anyone reading this thread in the future...
MY18 also tells you the range and when low enough how much to put in.
(Not just MY20 onwards as @Past Master suggests).
It's shown on the service screen in the car menu and also in the Remote app, I've managed to dig out an old screen shot of the Remote app just to prove the point.

Unfortunately I've recently topped up so the in car info is only showing range and the fact it's nearly full, later when the level drops it will show the maximum quantity to refill.

(You might have to change units in car or app to display in litres or gallons)

Here is a pic of a MY18 showing the amount also.

Thanks @Col_C I was also trying to stress it's not imperative to top up the moment you get the 1500 mile warning

Agreed! (head and brick walls comes to mind :) - still not convinced the fundamental is understood )
I've been trying to stay away from non-introduced newbie "help me" threads, but there's been so much bad/dangerous advice in the earlier pages of this thread I had to relent.

So, as posted earlier in the thread, at 1491.2 I had a warning to refill 9ltrs. I put @ 7ltrs in and I now get this…

If your car has a blue filling cap next to the diesel filler cap, then the capacity is about 14 litres. Since you can buy 10 litre containers quite cheaply with a filler neck included from places like Screwfix. I'd start with the 10 litres and then top up again when the system says you need more.. You just need to be quite strong to lift a 10 litre container and hold it in place as it won't pour out very quickly. the flexible filler nexck has an air bleed return pipe which limits the flow rate and reduces the risk of splashback. I've just done mine.

After you have filled up it will take a good 100 miles for the system to recalculate the range, so don't worry if initally it is still showing a low mileage to refill.

They’ve even been selling the stuff in Aldi recently 👀😱 I usually get mine from Halfrauds.
