DPF woes

Afternoon all,

we have a 66plate my17 evoque which we’ve leased from new.
We have had dpf issues from day dot really. In May last year Land Rover admitted there was a fault a known fault with the DPF filter in my car it was then replaced under warranty. However shortly after then we noticed fumes in the cabin of the car goes back to Land Rover turns out the filter wasn’t fitted correctly. Fast forward to yesterday Morning I pull off the drive and for the first time since then the engine filter warning light comes on I get about 2 miles down the road and the red warning light comes on advising the car to go to dealer.

I spoke to Land Rover (we are now out of warranty) Explained the issues and the previous ones I was told I would get a phone call back and an email. These things never materialised, I found today very dismissive staff and I’m finding myself panicking.

Surely we should’ve had more than four minutes to get the car at a speed to clear the DPF filter. I wondering whether this is a sensor issue or whether it’s a DPF filter issue either way I’m reluctant to be out of pocket when this issue had been apparently fixed just over six months ago.

My trust in Land Rover is lacking has anyone experienced similar I’m expecting there to be at least a few? And is there an alternative way I can go about getting this fixed and avoiding possibly a good thousand spent on another repair?

Hi Blakeys, welcome to the forum, it is sad you are having these problems but with the history if this vehicle (which I assume you have documented) it should not be a great problem to convince JLR that something is not right here, possibly their fault when sorting our previous problems with the DPF. Maybe a strong talking to is what they need to se the error of their ways & get it sorted properly.
Keep in touch with the outcome, best of luck.

Hi .... go into search at top of page and type in DPF lots of threads regarding this... worth reading through them all ... threaten to return your car as not fit for purpose , you were not informed of driving style , the fact that this is a known problem, there’s lots of interesting thoughts on this in the posts

So no word today of my car as they are still waiting on a response from “goodwill.”
Does anyone have the details to make a complaint to JLR? From us there is nothing left to discuss but don’t like being dangled...
hi - just joined this forum today. Need to share! Briefly - Jun 18 Evoke. 33k mainly motorway miles. Have had 3 DPF fitted. The first one (as Blakeys) not fitted correctly with fumes in cabin. JLR tried the driving style cause, but clearly not the case with me. All have been covered by warranty. That said, last one fitted in July this year was a "good will gesture" and part of Retailer Empowerment. However, in Aug the red DPF full light and car is back in dealer requiring 4th DPF filter. JLR and Dealer both say, fault has been caused by my driving style. Working from home / lockdown mileage cant be avoided. JLR Customer Service (with whom i've had numerous conversations and have direct dial numbers if helps anyone ) said they wont cover under warranty and I am to foot the bill (£2k plus.) Currently am looking at alternatives ie DPF cleaning companies. They all seem to be able to fix issue. Costs for cleaning and diagnostics a fraction of the replacement cost. The more I find out the more it seems JLR resort to more expensive and profitable DPF replacement rather than use or sub contract out, a more effective (cheaper) clearing remedy. I'm also learning that replacement DPF simply addresses the effect and not the cause of the issue. The issue can be sensors or other elements and whilst driving short distances can be the cause, they are not the only cause. Has anyone had experience of using DPF cleaning companies they could recommend. I will keep post updated if of interest.

Yes play on the it wasnt fitted properly and so it could have been degraded because of this too. You will need to be firm and should get onto customer service if you get stonewalled. Hopefully given the history already they should do something for you.

Brilliant .... sums it up perfectly...can’t believe nobody has taken them to court yet... been saying it for ages it’s a scandal.... I think that when the bubble bursts and no doubt in my mind it will Landrover could go under it’s basically a mis-sold car , yes I believe they are now informing customers of driving style at purchase... but before releasing the new model they had every opportunity to rectify the existing problem. If this ever goes to court and the customer wins it opens up the floodgates , why on earth would they not try to fix a exsisting problem before releasing new model ....are no lessons learnt.
I have been told that somewhere over towards Edinburgh JLR have purchased a huge plot of land ,warehouse as the garages / dealerships can’t cope with the amount of breakdowns there’s not enough room at dealerships to store the backlog...(.hope mines not there, thinking about it) .

Sudden AMBER to RED DPF light is a known issue related to the generic exhaust design fault. There are links to download the specific JLR technical service bulletins in the D8 exhaust guide attachment. See section 6, pp 18/19 "There is more likelihood of a clogged DPF".

Don't accept any cr@p, it's a well known and documented fault and regardless of your warranty status you still have very strong grounds to reject the vehicle if they refuse to put it right.

Afternoon all, appreciate all your advice, thanks truly for your time!

update.

car is in at LR today and has been diagnosed.

the new dpf that was fitted 7 months ago cannot be regenerated at all nor has it done since being fitted. Same thing we had before! The car had never regenerated in the 2 and a bit years prior and a forced regeneration couldn’t be done either.

however, this part, the dp filter, despite being new, isn’t covered under land rover’s parts warranty (apparently? Is this true?!)
The person looking after us seems sympathetic that this is the case and I explained as politely as I could that they won’t be seeing a penny out of me considering it’s the same thing they were supposed to fix 7 months ago.

whilst that may get sorted, why on earth is it not regenerating at all, even when the specialists are attempting to force it? Very much feels like we’re putting a plaster on it without addressing the root cause.

I tell you what, this car is up in September, we’re certainly not keeping it but I am gutted for whoever buys it next, they’re going to have one hell of a headache.

Regeneration is done by the ECU changing the fuelling to heat the exhaust and DPF, so if it's really not working there is something amiss in the software configuration, and so any new DPF will be wrecked over time. Yes the root cause needs to be sorted.

Hi Jonh- sorry to hear you are having issues. I don’t have any advice, we got rid in June a few months earlier than planned, she’s now up in Alexandria in Glasgow and I keep an eye out to see if anyone up there has a headache!

I do recommend Tesla though, oh it’s nice to have no engine issues! 😆

wishing you luck!
