Hello

I have searched the forum and can find plenty of threads regarding issues with the Haldex however, most refer to symptoms when turning corners.

My vehicle has developed a problem albeit currently intermittently when pulling away in invariably a straight line. It is pretty much like the wheels are skidding and primarily from the front. I can’t say I have noticed it when turning not from the back.

I get no warning lights or noises and it is only fairly recent, it is like pulling away on a slightly gravel surface or ice. Car has done 35k.

Thanks in advance.

If its not making a noise how do you know its skidding, whats it doing that gives you that impression - are the revs rising but the car not, do the revs not match the cars speed, is it during acceleration or when you back off to change gear? Can't say Ive ever got wheelspin in in ours - pretty difficult with a 4x4 in the dry but with a front wheel drive car for instance any wheelspin would immediately be cancelled out by the traction control and you'd even get a warning light flash up while the traction control is in operation - usually says something like 'DSC' or 'TC', what sort of surfaces are you on because you won't get wheelspin on tarmac and probably only slightly on gravel but then you'd really have to floor it for that to happen and even then you'd get a traction light

Theres been threads just in the recent past about wheelspin noise and it appears to have been turbo flutter, search the site for that or check some videos on youtube

When I say no noise I mean abnormal noises. You can hear the clunking from the perceived skidding, almost a small shudder through the car. I can’t tell if it’s skidding as I am in the car but there doesn’t appear to be any physical wheel spin. I don’t expect to be able to wheel spin a 4x4 on dry surfaces for sure - so far all examples have been tarmac.

The revs seem consistent but as an auto gearbox there is no jerking at gear change and the car advances gears smoothly. As I said no warnings of any sort.

Checked turbo flutter and I don’t have any symptoms reported on the threads here. It’s definitely coming from the traction side of things.

Maybe the ABS is faulty ? Try scanning the car to see if there are any fault codes stored.

Update.

Fault codes checked and nothing recorded. However when reversing from my local auto techs premise, quarter lock on the steering the noise / sensation appeared from the rear of the vehicle. Speed less than 10mph and idle throttle.

The search continues but suspect a trip to the dealers.

@sps1013 Here's a thread along similar lines - unfortunately the OP didn't update which is frustrating!

Please remember to keep your thread updated as things progress.
Good luck with it.

@sps1013 I have seen several people mention it in the past, I believe they called it "Chuffing", Noises and holding back or YouTube
In my previous Evoque I also experienced it sometimes, never found out what it really was though.

Thanks, hadn’t found this thread which describes my issues to a “T” - plenty more on the same lines though (most without a final update!)

I will come back with an update.

Hi, just a tip if it is the Haldex, there are two parts, the pump/clutch and the electronic control unit that bolts on the side.
I had similar issues on my old XC90 that also uses Haldex couplings. Fortunately the dealer diagnosed it was the control unit at fault. Expensive for the part at £1100 but only one hour to fit. Never had any problems thereafter and I sold the car with 160000 miles, original Haldex was never serviced.

I have since found that there are a couple of specialist companies that bench test and rebuild the electronic Haldex control units. (It is generally a solder joint or component inside that fails).
May be worth speaking to them, they major on the point that dealers and most garages change the whole unit (easy to do and good profit) when it actually only needs a repair.
The control unit is just two bolts to remove so you could even send it away for testing on a DIY basis.
Hope this helps and saves a few pennies, I have not had need to use the companies myself but would be willing to try them.
Just search Haldex repairs and a few pop up.
Good luck and please update what the actual cause was when sorted.

Just wanted to provide an update...

Took the vehicle to my local independent LR who rechecked the diagnostic data. Nothing recorded at all except a temporary loss of the nearside wing mirror camera. Following that they checked the Haldex and pump and all working well and the AWD worked as required.

Further checked the ABS and brakes but again all good.

4 days after posting initially on here the problem stopped, remained absent prior to going to the garage and has remained operating normally ever since so I have elected not to progress at this stage. A view the garage echoed.

Ironically just received an email from my main dealer asking if I want to sell! Hmmm.

I have a feeling it’s the same issue as mine as the skidding sensation when pulling away seems to be the same. Mine has been in the garage for 4 weeks (lots of different delays due to different reasons). It’s already had the Haldex pump replaced which didn’t fix the issue. Now a new Haldex unit is on order from LR to be delivered hopefully on Monday. I’m hoping this fixes the issue as it’s already cost a fortune to get to this point. I’ll update you all when I get the car back next week 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 If it’s not resolved then I’m afraid it’ll be time to get shot and move on. 😢

Perhaps a warranty next time?

Perhaps a warranty next time?
Oh don’t worry, I do have warranty on this car but it’s still cost me money as the max they pay out per repair is £3,000. I wouldn’t ever get a JLR without extended warranty but it’s not just the issue of money, it’s the constant hassle having it in the garage all the time! Takes the shine off owning the car really. I do still love my car though - to my own detriment 😂

Just to be clear, I guess this can't be a LR extended warranty as their limit is the value of the vehicle?

Nah I got the car second hand in October last year so the warranty is just with RAC. They’ve been a great company so far, don’t get me wrong. So far they’ve paid out already for the Haldex pump replacement which I think was about £500 and £3,000 towards the new Haldex unit which is still ongoing and hopefully fixes the issue 🤞🏼

Hi guys, just an update on this issue I had. I finally got my car back after having the Haldex unit replaced and this has finally fixed the "skidding" sensation I was having. So in total I've had the Haldex unit and also the pump replaced.

Maybe this is the same issue as the OP had and will give them somewhere to start looking. It's not a cheap job though :(

Update on the update.... Seems the skidding sensation has returned even after all this work has been carried out. It does it when the wheel is turned and you put your foot down a bit. I'm at a loss now and rapidly losing faith in the car 😩
