So - been having a mooch around the forum and some queries have come to mind (apologies as I'm sure there will be more coming)

4WD/AWD? - I've read about Haldex units, which would suggest the Evoque is not a 'true' AWD as this unit does jiggery-pokery diverting power to wheels as needed?

Off-road capabilities - it does appear the Evoque is more than capable off-road, but I have to ask - is this down to the tyre that are fitted? Are standard tyres up to the job or do you need specific off-road tyres - coupled with that does wheel size make a difference?

Headlights - Xenon or LED? I've read the Xenons are poor? Are the LED the main headlights or just the running lights?

Maintaining - The car we will be looking at (budget wise) will probably be out of 3yr warranty (or close to it) - I see myself as being able to tackle some maintenance tasks - oil changes, brake disc/pad replacements - how far can a home DIY mechanic go?

Cheers MIB

Hi MIB,

So, the 4wd/Awd thingy. And I can only speak for the MY20 as I don’t know if things changed for that, or if it’s the same across the range, the car runs in FWD to cut down on fuel consumption, but depending on the configuration selected, the car will automatically operate all 4 wheels to drive if it senses lack of traction. You can also choose various off road Selections, snow, sand, mud etc and the car will run constantly in 4wd applying the correct amount of torque to the wheels for the scenario selected.

Of course the tyres make a difference. If you run summer tyres and go wallowing in mud no amount of drive is likely to get you out, so off road tyres are advisable if that’s what you intend to use it for.

mine has LED headlights and they are pretty much awesome, although because of the current situation, which arose almost as soon as I picked my car up, I have rarely used it in the dark. I can’t speak about the xenons on the Evoque, but my other car an RCZ has them and they are pretty much superb too.

As for DIY, when it comes to cars I always leave it to someone who knows what they are doing. So can’t really help you there.

Hi MiB.
I have the earlier 2.2 Diesel engine and DIY maintenance is straight forward. Can’t see the 2.0 being much different from a maintenance point of view. All filters are easily accessible, (thought the oil filter insert is a bit of a pain due to position half way up the engine). Full set of land rover filters was £68 (oil, air, fuel, cabin). Oil is pricy Castrol edge or similar, (£40 to £60 for 5l and it takes 6l on the 2.2). Brakes are absolutely standard set up same as in most cars so very easy to change pads and disks.
As for the Haldex unit, these have been in loads of cars for many years, they just work well but should last longer with occasional oil changes.
I will also change the auto transmission fluid. may do it myself or get a specialist to do it. I think about 60 to 70 thousand is the right time. It is not specifically required but will probably gunk up around 150k if not touched. (Same box as early Volvo XC90 and they can die at 150k if left untouched.

AWD/4WD i think DKZ has covered it all, yes its not permanent 4WD but the haldex system works well enough for the type of car it is

Off road capabilities - for what the car is it copes about just enough, if you want to go mud bogging then you need a defender, standard tyres are Continental cross contacts(purely a summer tyre) and Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season(summer winter), nothing wrong with the conti as a tyre but the preferred choice and which suits the car better is the Pirelli, easily handles muddy gravel lanes and snow, if you need to cross a ploughed field then you need nobblies or a defender again.

Headlights - choices are halogen, zenon or LED, forget halogen they are last century although do come on the very basic of basic evoque models, zenons are apparently pretty good I hear and the LED's even better still, do not confuse LED headlights with LED daytime running lights(DRL's), all DRL's are LED, not all 'headlights' are, I have LED headlights and I don't think I could go back to even zenons they are that good, I was lucky as we bought ours second hand and it came with them, £1500 option I believe, jammy isn't the word!

Personally I would have a warranty even if it means paying for one, the service items that have been mentioned wouldn't be covered anyway so you'd have to do them yourself but things like sheared steering rack bolts is a 3k job(new rack) DPF is probably a grand, oil dilution on diesel MY16 cars onwards COULD mean a new engine if extremely unlucky, then the odd warning light which is a JLR feature, could be simple or could be days on a diagnostic machine at £120 per hour labour

So I'm back in the room again after looking at various examples online. One thing I've noticed is the info/Sat Nav screen - some seem to have 4 buttons down each side whereas some (later models?) Seem to have a bigger screen but no buttons? When did this change come about?
Cheers

2017 my. depending on Model- JLR STILL sell cars with that old system in them!!!!!

#8 ·
As Maffy says , 2017 models which came out late 2016 on 66 plates

#12 ·
Hi MIB, do you mean the system or JLR allocation of unit to model etc?

#14 ·
It would seem that the lower the model then you would get the previous model-I have seen one of the older models in a 2020 Evoque though so have no idea really.
the bigger screen is much better-fully touch screen, clearer, live updates, ytraffic etc and is sim data enabled.

IIRC the widescreen sat nav without the 4 buttons down each side was standard on Dynamic models upwards for 2017 models. I think the SE Tech model still had the older system with the buttons unless you paid for the upgrade.

#18 ·
As for the MY20 it was an option on the base model and the S to upgrade to the twin screen. It was standard on the SE upwards. I think the R-Dynamic was more of a body kit upgrade from what I can remember.

Going back to the original post. The Evoque is quite capable off road with the Pirelli Scorpion Verde M+S that come as standard on a lot of them. That what was fitted on the Evoque at the off road experience centre I went to. Unless you plan on some serious mud plugging they'll do fine.

Most questions are answered by friendly members here. If you are planning to go off-road frequently, then consider discovery as well. Very similar car, however, bit more clearance.

Can't seem to find a video where they showed those two cars side by side. Only managed to get this video:

Did my experience day in an Evoque-don't underestimate them-they as XZ4 stated very capable off road.

You mention that the Xenons might not be up to par. I find them fairly good but their main limitation is that they use a 'shutter' to change between dip & main. This is obviously not as good as having separate main & dip bulbs but you can improve things a bit by changing the HID bulbs for one of the upgraded (+150%) versions offered by Osram or Philips. These often make things much better - HID bulbs get quite 'tired' after a few years anyway and it is worth replacing them.
The LEDs are simply awesome and I wish my Lux had them :devilish:

What he said really.

I found that Evoque xenons are poor compared to other brands. Mrs X3 had much better xenons.

However, as Bazman said, if you are not happy then you can upgrade them. I have used Osram on my other car and they have massively improved the beam.

PS: Not everyone is lucky like Maffy to have LEDs 🤣 and of course, LEDs are better blinding others.

I have often thought that the aftermarket companies are missing a trick with the Evoque's lights. The rarely used fog lights could be dual purposed as fogs / spots using LEDs - I think I have seen them sold as DRLs / fogs on some auction sites.

Doink is the man to answer anay questions re LED's- I just lurrrve mine (but then they are on my Merc!)

#34 ·
The LED‘s were standard on my MY20 SE. Matrix version was an option.

#37 ·
This is what I was after, so all new 2020 evoques have LED headlights but some have as an option the matrix LED's, am I right then in saying there is no zenon version in the latest evoque?

So what difference is there between the LED and the matrix LED?
