I HAVE BOOKED MY RR IN AT THE LOCAL STEALERS (FARNEL BOLTON) TO HAVE THE FUEL TANK SHIELD REPLACED. HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS TAKES 3.7 HOURS. PARTS £40 SHIELD AND £50 STRAPS/FITTINGS LABOR £486. DO YOU THINK THIS IS REASONABLE?

Looks like it is a reasonably big job to replace:

About £130.00 an hour labour. Probably right these days but sounds a lot to me. The shield comes in one piece and goes across the car so the exhaust and the propshaft have to come off first so that’s where the time comes in.
Is yours very rusty? Had a look at mine at the start of the lockdown and wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, went round the rusty bits with some hammerite rust cure.

I know there is a lot to remove, but how can anyone justify £130 p/h? They seriously need to think about reducing their operating costs.
At that rate it would be cheaper pay a reputable non specialist to take twice as long!

It must be bad if it needs replaced. If it's not too bad I'd be using some ACF50 or curust then hammerite on it rather than replacing it at that price.

I got mine replaced under warranty. It was only surface rust but I showed then
m some photos of how bad it could rust through. They said they’d send the photos to JLR as what could happen.

£130 AN HOUR BECAUSE CAR IS OVER 3 YEARS OLD. UNDER 3 YEARS IS £160 AN HOUR. BACK IN THE 90S THEY HAD 3 DIFFERENT RATES FOR DEFENDER, DISCOVERY AND RANGE ROVER

I had a local garage do mine - it was crumbling to bits. Bought the shield myself and had it powder coated first. The main problem for them was removing the exhaust and prop shaft - they were solid. The prop shaft should have originally been assembled with some type of grease but was completely dry. It took them about 5 hrs to complete and was charged £200 labour.
All I can say, the price they’re quoting for the tank shield alone is a good one.

My local dealer rate is £186 p/h I had mine replaced under warranty. It is worth trying that route.

I wonder if dealers realise, the way they’re increasing their hourly rate, it will soon be cheaper to get a solicitor to have a look at your car 🤔

I think I may have to crawl underneath mine tmw morn to look at the fuel shield. It’s going to Austen at Bell Engineering in two weeks for a Haldex service. Am I right in saying he has to unbolt the propshaft and exhaust to do this which is the same as when the fuel shield is replaced.Just thinking if it is corroded and he’s willing I could kill two birds with one stone 🤔

I think they only drop the prop and exhaust at the rear, not remove them completely which is needed for the fuel tank shield to be removed. Might be worth phoning them up first and asking them and if they will do it, take the parts along yourself.

Thanks Steve D. I have had a look underneath and surprisingly it looks rust free despite plenty of other rusty bits!

It is incredible that JLR do not cover this under the anti-corrosion warranty.
Unfortunately that is a crazy price.
If you don’t fancy doing yourself, as mentioned above, I’d get your local trusted garage to do it. There is no need or point to having JLR do this work at a million pounds an hour unless it is FOC under warranty.

Agree there CBW, Order the parts then if you can DIY, failing that use your local independent. Treat it yourself with anti rust first, will be 1/3 of JLR dealer.
